Fall 2018 Calvary Masterworks Chorus

Fall 2018 Calvary Masterworks Chorus

LAST CHANCE FOR YOU TO BE A PART OF THE MASTERWORKS CHORUS.  COME TO THE REHEARSAL ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, AT 7:00 PM AND BE A PART OF THIS WONDERFUL MASTERWORK!!

Rehearsals will begin Monday August, 27 at 7:00 pm in Liberty Chapel on the Calvary University campus.  We will rehearse every Monday following (except Labor Day) with the performance on Friday, November 9 at 7:30 pm at an offsite location to be named later.  This year our primary work will be John Rutter’s “Requiem.”

Our Masterworks Concert will open with a series of beloved hymns by Charles Wesley, John Newton, and Isaac Watts that have been rethought by British Composer and jazz pianist, Christopher Norton. These beautiful, creative, and moving arrangements accompanied by a pipe organ give a new sense of beauty to the 18th century texts.

John Rutter’s Requiem was completed in 1985 and is a choral masterpiece. His setting of this work is beautiful, with melodies that illustrate the depth of the text. The text is a mixture of Latin and English and includes a movement that features his famous setting of Psalm 23.

Cost for participating is $25.00 per person with a maximum of $50.00 per family.  Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of our combined chorus to sing in this Masterwork.

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last Friday evening Calvary’s Music Department presented a concert entitled The Sounds of Christmas.  We heard several selections from the Chorale as well as a few soloists.  Students Cherrish Palmer, Jonathan Van Pelt, Christopher Stolberg, and Bethany Franklin played instrumental pieces, and six students performed as part of the orchestra.  The Men’s Chorale is comprised of staff, faculty, and students, and they sang a couple numbers.  Scripture readings were interspersed throughout the program, and the event ended with some congregational Christmas carols.  All in all, it was a nice way to start the month of December – focusing on the true “reason for the season.”

Calvary Masterworks Chorus Presents Elijah

Calvary Masterworks Chorus Presents Elijah

The 2017 Calvary Masterworks Chorus Presents Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”

The Calvary Masterworks Chorus invites you to enjoy an evening of classical music as they present Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.”  “Elijah” is an epic retelling of the Old Testament story of the prophet Elijah. Alongside Handel’s “Messiah,” this piece is considered one of the greatest oratorios ever written with music that conveys sheer power and emotion. Mendelssohn was determined that the drama of the story should be of central importance, and dramatic it certainly is!  A story of a curse that brings the scourge of drought, followed by despair, wickedness, cruelty, relief, tenderness, and mercy. The turmoil is finally resolved in an impassioned chorus of praise to the “Lord, our Creator.”

Please join us on Friday, November 10, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. at Blue River Bible Church, 15608 Fairchild Dr., Kansas City, MO 64147 to hear this wonderful Masterwork.  Ticket costs – $10.00 Adults, $7.00 for Seniors 65+/Students, Children 4 and under are Free.  Tickets are available at Calvary University switchboard or you can fill out your registration at the bottom of this page.

Online tickets have now closed. A limited number of tickets are available at the door and will be first come, first serve.
