Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

On November 9, the Calvary Masterworks Chorus presented selected hymns arranged by Christopher Norton and John Rutter’s Requiem to a capacity crowd.  The performance took place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lee’s Summit so that alumna Bethany Franklin could accompany the group on the pipe organ.  The chorus was comprised of Calvary students, staff, alumni, and local singers and was conducted by Jeremy Schell.  Students Brittany Hill, Charis Schneeberger, Marilla Flynn, and Abigail Dutoit were soloists.  The Requiem was also accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble including student Benjamin Aeschliman on the flute.

Dr. Tommy Ice

The third annual Charles Ryrie Lecture Series took place October 23-26, 2018.  Calvary’s own professor, Dr. Tommy Ice, was the speaker for the four-day event.  He is the Program Director for the Bachelor in Bible & Theology, and he serves as the Executive Director of the Pre-Trib Research Center.  Dr. Ice spoke on Tuesday about the importance of Bible prophecy.  In the final three sessions, he gave overviews of the pre-trib rapture, tribulation, millennium, and the eternal state.  Each message was filled with good information, and students had the opportunity to ask questions at the end.  The week concluded with Day of Prayer as students spent the morning praying with faculty and staff before attending the final session.

Calvary Masterworks Chorus presents John Rutter’s Requiem

John Rutter’s “Requiem”

The 2018 Calvary Masterworks Chorus invites you to enjoy an evening of classical & hymn music as they present John Rutter’s “Requiem.”

Our Masterworks Concert will open with a series of beloved hymns by Charles Wesley, John Newton, and Isaac Watts that have been rethought by British Composer and jazz pianist, Christopher Norton. These beautiful, creative, and moving arrangements accompanied by a pipe organ give a new sense of beauty to the 18th-century texts. John Rutter’s “Requiem” was completed in 1985 and is a choral masterpiece. His setting of this work is beautiful, with melodies that illustrate the depth of the text. The text is a mixture of Latin and English and includes a movement that features his famous setting of Psalm 23.

  • Please join us on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 416 S.E. Grand Ave., Lee’s Summit, MO 64063 to hear this wonderful Masterwork.

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last weekend Calvary’s Theatre Arts Department presented Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.

Ann Deever (Mallory Pihl) and Chris Keller (Vincent Matteson)

The story of the play takes place a few years after the end of World War II, so our student body supported the cast and crew by dressing in ‘40s fashion on Friday.  We are thankful for all of the time and effort put in to producing this show by many students and faculty members.

Ann Deever (Mallory Pihl) and Kate Keller (Christy Stone)

George Deever (Zeb Johnson) and Joe Keller (Corey Ruehling)

The play is a tragedy and centers on the Keller family.  It presents thought-provoking themes of family relationships and suicide, and the actors sought to really understand what the world was like during that time period.
