Volleyball Warriors honored as NCCAA scholar team

Team finished second among twenty-four teams with a collective GPA of 3.58

Calvary University’s volleyball team made it on the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) list of 2020 scholar teams. To be eligible for this honor, a team must have a collective minimum grade point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 grading scale.

On top of being eligible for this award, these women finished in the top two of twenty-four teams with a collective GPA of 3.58!

“As a first-year coach,” said Head volleyball coach Josh Johnson, “one of my hopes was to prioritize daily encouragement of the team in their pursuit of Jesus, and in their pursuit of academic excellence. There were many times that I came up short in this goal. God is faithful. The Lord was working in and through this team on both levels.”

“I am so thankful,” Johnson continued, “for two assistant coaches, Carolyn Bradley and Esther Hildebrandt, who passionately pursue discipleship opportunities within the team. That fact combined with how my wife sacrificially serves the team has been a recipe for life-on-life discipleship.”

Basketball team struggles in first national appearance

Calvary’s Men’s Basketball team fought hard in it’s first-ever NCCAA National Tournament contest, but was outgunned by #1 seeded Randal University on Wednesday afternoon.

“We didn’t shoot well,” said CU Head Coach, Matt Sanders. “We played good defense for the entirety of the first half, but you’ve got to give them (Randall) a lot of credit. They did a good job. They’re really, really good and it just wasn’t our day today.”

The final score was 89-54 with the Warriors shooting just 18-55 (32.7%) compared to Randall’s 33-68 (48.5%). Braydon Unruh led CU with 13 points, D’Marques Harris contributed 8 and both Tobias Welling and Demitrius White-Thomas added 6 each.

The Warriors will play in the consolation bracket Thursday morning at 10 a.m. A win will put them in the 5th place contest on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The tournament is being hosted by Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri. There will also be a watch party for all the games in the Warrior Cafe on Calvary’s campus in Kansas City. Live streaming and on demand viewing can be purchased by following this link.

“God has so richly blessed us,” said CU Athletic Director, Jeanette Regier, “with three leaders who have helped beyond words with Zak (Kirkman), Braydon (Unruh), and Ques (Harris). When you see them congratulate them for a job well done! Matt (Sanders) and Robbie (Bollinger) have done their normal outstanding work as our coaches.” Kirkman is sidelined with a knee injury.

Calvary’s President, Dr. Alexander Granados pointed out that, “A lot of teams are already fishing, and would love to still be playing. It’s a great accomplishment to be here.”

Calvary Women Fall Just Short in Region Championship

Calvary Women Fall Just Short in Region Championship

The Calvary Warriors fell short in the NCCAA DII North Region Championship on Saturday afternoon as the team lost to #1 seeded Maranatha Baptist University 64-78 in Ankeny, IA. The Warriors came out quite strong, battling hard to take the lead for much of the first half before eventually losing the lead in the third quarter.

The Warriors endured foul trouble throughout the contest. They handled it well throughout the first half but came out flat after the half, losing momentum and going down eleven points in the quarter. Starting the fourth quarter with the deficit was too much to overcome in the end. Taylor Hunter valiantly tried to keep her team within reach with 35 points. Anna Holloway added 16 points to the cause.

“The effort and desire to play as a team gave us what we needed to finish the weekend well, stated Coach Tressa Shoemaker. “My desire was that if it was the end, we would end well together, fighting together, encouraging together, and glorifying God together … that’s what this team did.”

This team has accomplished more in the last three years than most expected. They have played for five titles, set records that will be difficult to break for years to come, and endeared themselves to the Calvary family. We want to let the players sign off for this season with their thoughts. Well done ladies!!

Tori

“We had an amazing last month of basketball. Everyone one of us got to be a star in our own way. We enjoyed each other so much during this time we spent as a team. This loss hurt so badly because we felt exhaustion like no other.  We played so well together because we wanted to succeed together. We loved well. God filled us with something different, His strength and endearing love. We used that and we got to this end, this wonderful yet bitter end.”

BAM (BethelAnn Manson)

“Throughout this past season we have had some highs and lows. I am so grateful that I am on a team that lives for Him and praises God in the wins, but also in the losses. Even though today didn’t end the way that we wanted it to, I think it’s safe to say that we are all just filled with thankfulness to God for the past several years that we have had with one another.

Taylor

“We were chosen for this. God placed us on this team, with this special group of girls and coaches and it’s all because of Him that we were able to accomplish so much in the past 3 to 4 years of being at Calvary.  It’s rare to find a team that loves each other this much and who glorifies the Lord through their actions. They all have become my best friends and I will remember these moments for the rest of my life, these are the stories that will be passed down from generation to generation.

Avery

Behind all the hours of practice and the coaches who’ve pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back.

Lynzee

“I am so thankful for my teammates and the memories we’ve made. I just want to thank them all for helping be grow and be the best me possible.”

Warriors advance to first national tournament

Braydon Unruh and Tobias Welling powered the Warriors with 26 and 16 points respectively as the team overcame a #6 seed and an even tougher opponent to defeat #1 seeded Trinity Bible College 80-72. With the win, the Warriors advance to their first NCCAA DII National Championship.” Our go to players played like they were players of the year tonight,” Warrior Head Coach Matt Sanders said. “We’ve been working since October for games like these and we had guys who really stepped up for us to get the win.”

Trinity Bible College beat the Warriors by thirty in December.  They averaged over ninety points per game throughout the season so coming in Calvary knew they needed a fantastic game plan.   They used a lot of shot clock on every possession to slow the game down, but offensively they executed the possessions they had with precision.  Key minutes from Ike Maxwell and Peter Brandel put them over the top as the big three of Braydon Unruh, Ques Harris, and Tobias Welling continued their outstanding production on the season.

Defensively, the goal was to slow the game down and to keep the score in the 70’s.  The team did a great job with this using their full court zone press back into multiple zones. The different zone looks and tough man to man kept Trinity off balance.  Ques Harris was big on the glass with nine boards on the night.

“God has been so faithful,” Sanders said.  “We talked today about what faith is from Hebrews 11:1, and how the evidence of faith is only seen in the hope of Jesus.  All Glory truly goes to Him.  We look forward to hanging this banner in The Pyramid and celebrating what actually took place here tonight.  We continue to set new standards for Calvary Athletics and look forward with great anticipation to the National Tournament.

This is a tremendous accomplishment that is best told through the players themselves.  The rest of this article will be thoughts from the 2020-21 North Region Champions.

Ike Maxwell

“It just finally clicked.  We’ve been so close to each other and we secretly knew we were capable of this. The scary part is that we still haven’t seen our best.  Maybe there was a run or two tonight where it was close, but the best is yet to come. The greatest part about this is that these snippets of net and banner aren’t eternal, and every single person on this team understands that. We know that it is in the conversations and the way we go about things that glorify God.  That banner isn’t anything but a filthy rag compared to the riches we will cast at the feet of Jesus.  It’s not about whose name is in the stat book, It’s about whose name is written in the Lamb’s book.”

D’Marques Harris

“Today was a byproduct of a group of collective individuals coming together and moving as one cohesive unit. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes!”

Braydon Unruh

“I am so proud of our team and all the work we have put in.  I am also extremely grateful and humbled by God’s faithfulness.  All glory goes to HIM!”

Zak Kirkman

“I would not want to play with any other group of brothers.  Every single person on this team works with an attitude to please the Lord in everything they do.  May God be glorified each time we step onto the court!”

Peter Brandel

“We play this game to worship Jesus as brothers in Christ.  Today’s game was a reflection of all the hard work and sacrifice that was put in by each person on this team.  We compete to win every game, but more importantly we compete to glorify God.  Today we were able to do both. All for HIM!”

Coleson Voran

“There has been so much uncertainty this season with COVID that every game was a blessing.  Seeing everyone go out and battle today, and now having the opportunity to compete at Nationals is overwhelming.  It’s obvious God has been working.”

Tobias Welling

“Tonight, we made the decision that losing just wasn’t an option.  We did this by believing in one another, loving one another, and never giving up on each other.  This was only possible by remembering what Christ did for us.  He never gives up on us, and He loves us so much that He died on the cross for our sins.  As we play, we strive to remember this truth and show it to others with our words and our actions.”

Seth Hower

“Being able to just be a part of this team and cheering on the guys from the sideline as we battled was an absolute blessing. When the clock finally hit 0 it was an unbelievable feeling!”

Jamaal Smith

“I’ve never been a part of a team that has had this big of a positive impact on me.  I am thankful and blessed to be here.  We are truly a family.  All praise to God!”

Joseph Morrow

“I’ve never played on a team with people that love each other like we do.  We didn’t make this happen with one or two people.  We all believed in each other from day one, even when things weren’t going our way.  All Glory to God!”

Robby Bollinger

“What I witnessed today was unbelievably amazing.  Seeing a group of guys come together and believe in each other while executing like we did was AWESOME!”

Jesse House

The Lord brought every person together to fulfill each of their roles and to shine for Him.  All of it points back to Him.  It was a blessing to do my part in taking stats and cheering on the team to lift them to a championship!”

Calvary Can’t Slow Trinity in 64-93 Loss

Calvary Can’t Slow Trinity in 64-93 Loss

The Calvary Warriors saw their opportunity at the Faith Baptist Christmas Classic come to an end as the team fell to the Trinity Lions 64-93. The defeat marks the end of a tough losing streak before semester break as CU drops their record to 0-8.

“Trinity doesn’t really have many weaknesses,” Warrior Head Coach Matt Sanders said following the loss. “It was apparent tonight that we were sluggish and tired after the 2OT game from last night.  We struggled with putting the ball in the hole and playing good defense.  I look forward to coming back after the break and fixing some of these issues.”

The first half of action began with Trinity coming out strong and shooting well against the Warrior zone.  They never relinquished the lead after the strong start offensively.  Tobias Welling, Joseph Morrow and Coleson Voran were a highlight as they gave some great minutes off the bench.   They were a part of the defensive unit called “The Storm Troopers” that again caused Trinity some trouble with significant defensive pressure.

Welling led the team in scoring with 15 points.  Zak Kirkman and Joseph Morrow each contributed 12 points in the effort.  As a team, the Warriors shot 30% from the floor and 17% from deep. The team was 79% from the charity stripe.
