Call for Calvary Masterworks Chorus

Call for Calvary Masterworks Chorus

Elijah ! by Felix Mendelssohn ; Masterworks ChoraleIt’s not too late to join the Calvary Masterworks Chorus!!  You can still come on MONDAY, September 11.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to sing this wonderful work!  Sign up now!!

The 2017 Calvary Masterworks Chorus presents Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”

“Elijah” is an epic retelling of the Old Testament story of the prophet Elijah. Alongside Handel’s “Messiah,” this piece is considered one of the greatest oratorios ever written with music that conveys sheer power and emotion. Mendelssohn was determined that the drama of the story should be of central importance, and dramatic it certainly is!  A story of a curse that brings the scourge of drought, followed by despair, wickedness, cruelty, relief, tenderness, and mercy. The turmoil is finally resolved in an impassioned chorus of praise to the “Lord, our Creator.”

A word from Jeremy Schell, our Director:

The Music Department at Calvary University invites you to be a part of this year’s Masterworks Chorus as we present Mendelssohn’s Elijah!  This incredible choral work tells the story of Elijah from Scripture and is considered one of the “must do” choral pieces for any singer.

Our first rehearsal is Monday, August 28 at 7:00 pm at Calvary University, in Liberty Chapel.  We will rehearse every Monday following (except Labor Day) until our performance on Friday, November 10 at 7:30 pm.

The cost to join the choir is $25 per person and $50 for a family.   You may sign-up at our first rehearsal, or by clicking HERE.

If you plan to join us, please reply as soon as possible so we can prepare music ahead of time.  If you’re interested in getting your own copy, we are using the Schirmer edition:  https://www.amazon.com/Elijah-Oratorio-Baritone-Schirmers-Oratorios/dp/0793545595/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1496153310&sr=1-1&keywords=mendelssohn+elijah

I sincerely hope to see you this August for what is sure to be a fantastic musical and worshipful experience!

Prepare. Enrich. Training Seminar

Prepare. Enrich. Training Seminar

Prepare/Enrich is one of the most widely researched relationship assessment tools.  Professors and students at colleges and universities worldwide use their scales as a tool to conduct and evaluate their research regarding the changing reality of relationships. More than 4,000,000 couples have prepared for marriage or enriched their relationship through taking the P/E assessment and working with a Certified Facilitator.  The assessment itself has been proven to improve relationship satisfaction; however, there is something extraordinary about the relationship a Facilitator develops with a couple that truly helps the couple grow more than they would on their own.

Now, YOU have a chance to become a certified facilitator! If you’re a church leader or in a counseling ministry that deals with premarital/marriage/relationship counseling and are looking for tools to help you create structure, then the Prepare/Enrich seminar with Dr. Joa Braga is an excellent resource.   Those attending the workshop will become certified on Prepare Enrich and be able to administer and use the inventory in their ministry with couples. This training is a required assignment for those taking Marriage and Family Counseling this fall.* If you have already taken the class but would like to become a certified facilitator, we would love to have you sign up. Below are more details:

  1. $100 covers the training cost (all materials and one free assessment to use with a couple).
  2. Training to take place 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, Sept. 9 in the Langmade Room at Calvary University. There will be a lunch break, but lunch is not included in the fee.

Calvary University Chorale Spring Tour

Calvary University Chorale Spring Tour

The Calvary University Chorale’s annual Spring Concert Tour is now complete and the students have gone back to their regular schedules.  All Calvary Faculty, Staff and Students had the opportunity to hear this year’s concert  based on “The Story” in a recent chapel service.   This production was a moving presentation of the Bible in readings, video and song.  It portrayed the events from Creation’s beginning to Christ’s resurrection.  The gospel was proclaimed for all to see and hear. This year’s concert involved, not only the entire Calvary Chorale, but several Praise Band Members as well, all within this exciting concert presentation.

From Jeremy Schell, the director: My vision for this year’s and following tours was to take the Chorale to a new “destination” city that would challenge their worldview and expand Calvary’s reach.

I chose to sing The Story on this tour, which is an evangelistic journey through the scriptures complete with narration, synchronized video, and a praise band.  This presentation is engaging to multiple generations and gives a clear presentation of the gospel message.

Our students performed well, developed deeper friendships, and were an absolute joy to work with.  This was a relatively young Chorale, and also the first time we traveled with a praise band.

I believe our students were challenged spiritually and God’s spirit was moving among our students as much as He was moving in our audiences.

We intend to take the Chorale to Costa Rica in 2018 and continue the desire to expand students’ worldviews.

NOTE: The trip to Costa Rica is open to the community as well as Calvary Students.  You do have to be able to sing as this will be a combined Chorale.

If you are interested in going or would be interested in sponsoring a student contact Jeremy Schell via email [email protected] or Teresa Purinton at [email protected] for more information.  A $50.00 deposit is required by April 15, 2017 so don’t delay.

Guest Piano Recital ft. Scott Carrell

Guest Piano Recital ft. Scott Carrell

Calvary University Music Department invites you to an evening of piano music with Scott Carrell as he performs in a Guest Piano Recital on Saturday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Liberty Chapel.  This is a FREE event, so invite your friends and come out for an evening of beautiful music.

What is the difference between a recital and a concert, you ask?  A concert is a musical performance given typically by several performers or of several separate compositions, but a recital is a more intimate program of music by a solo instrumentalist, singer or a small group.

Mr. Carrell comes with a wonderful variety of experiences as you will see in his resume below.

“Pianist SCOTT CARRELL has captivated audiences in the U.S., Europe and China with his virtuosic flair, expressive playing and informative comments, by presenting innovative programs of both classical and jazz works, including discussion of the works and the composers.

A native of Texas, Carrell has performed numerous recitals as soloist and as collaborator, including concerto appearances with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Pine Bluff Symphony Orchestra, the Southwestern University Orchestra, the Plainview Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra, the Little Rock Wind Symphony, and twice with the Harding University Community Orchestra.  An active chamber musician, he co-founded the Searcy Chamber Music Series and has performed in many of its concerts.  He has also performed in recital and small ensembles in Florence, Italy, and Mainz, Germany.  In 2014, he was invited to Guangzhou, China, to perform a concert, to give lectures, and to teach piano students in masterclasses.

Receiving degrees from Southwestern University, the University of Illinois, and the D.M.A. from the University of North Texas, he studied with internationally-known artists Drusilla Huffmaster, Ian Hobson, and Vladimir Viardo and participated in master classes with Abbey Simon, Gail Delente, and Dominique Merlet.  The French Piano Institute awarded him a prize for the best performance of a work by Henri Dutilleux at the 1996 FPI Festival in Paris, France.  He was twice honored with the Teacher Achievement Award from Harding University, for the 2003-2004 and 2012-2013 academic years.

In 2005, his compact disc “Crossings” was released, including the world premiere recording of the title work, an original composition based on a painting by an Arkansas artist.  The disc “Ragtime Memories” was released in 2007.  Other recent premieres of original works include a Suite for Brass Quintet (2011), Dance for Oboe and Piano (2011), and Conversation (2015) for double-reed trio.  Carrell is currently recording a disc of piano works by the French composer Noël Gallon.

An active member of the Arkansas State Music Teachers, he has presented sessions at both regional and state conferences and served as the state coordinator for the student composition competition; he began serving as the MTNA South Central Division coordinator in 2004.  His  judging activities include students at all levels, from local festivals to national competitions.  Currently teaching piano, piano related courses, and music theory at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, Carrell is in demand as a soloist, collaborative artist, teacher and adjudicator.”
