Position Title:  Organist-Choir Director

*Chancel Choir, Bell Choir, Youth/Children’s Choir

*Reporting to the Church Board of Session represented by the Personnel Committee; supervised by  Pastor Marcus Lambright.

Role Description:  

As part of the ministry team, the successful candidate will work with the pastor to enhance the worship through music.

As the Organist-Choir Director, responsibilities include:

Choosing service music including preludes and postludes for each Sunday.
Choosing liturgically appropriate hymns for all services to be approved by pastor.
Preparing for and running weekly Thursday rehearsals for the Bell and Chancel choirs in preparation for the weekly and special services (Christmas, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.) from September through mid-June.
Responsible for working with Youth/Children’s choir(s) to prepare musical participation in worship services.
Recruit choir members and hire singers/musicians as necessary. Assist choir members in developing their musical talents.
Purchase music and maintain physical and digital music libraries.
Maintain instruments arranging for tuning and other appropriate maintenance as necessary.  Included are the Aeolian-Skinner organ, the Steinway M grand piano in the chancel, the Roland electronic harpsichord, the Schulmerich bells and chimes, the choir room piano and the piano in the Assembly Room.
Assumes approximately 15 hours per week (see attached schedule).

 

Skills/Requirements:

Music degree or equivalent.
Organ proficiency.
Piano proficiency.
Choral conducting proficiency.
Knowledge of sacred music/choral repertoire.
Commitment to music ministry and working collaboratively with others.
Highly organized and efficient.
Successful completion of criminal record and child abuse background check.

Lighter summer schedule (Mid-June through September); choirs not active in summer.

Schedule of weekly hours:

Chancel Choir:  Thursday 2 hour rehearsal, 1 hour preparation.

Bell Choir:     Thursday 1 hour rehearsal, 1 hour preparation.

Children/Youth:  1 hour rehearsal, 1 hour preparation.

Sunday Service: 1 hour rehearsal, 1 hour service, 1 hour preparation.

Pastor:       1 hour planning meeting.

Special events:   2 hours

Practice/Planning: 2 hours

Total weekly:         15 hours
