Calvary Bible Church
6555 Townsend-Winona Rd. Flagstaff, AZ 86004

The purpose of Calvary Bible Church is that all would come to know Christ as their Savior and to grow in His grace. As our congregation has expanded in recent years, we see the need to hire a full-time worship pastor to help shepherd alongside the senior pastor. This role was previously filled on a volunteer basis. We are thankful for those who have served in that capacity, and look forward to growing as a leadership team with the addition of a vocational worship pastor.
General Description and Qualifications:
The office of Pastor is a high calling. This man is also called an elder and bishop/overseer. We see these roles defined in 1 Timothy 3:1; Titus 1:5; 1 Peter 5:1-4. A worship pastor must meet the qualifications of 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
Musical Qualifications:
Music knowledge: ability to read music, understand how voices relate, basic chord structure, time signatures, key signatures, dynamics.
Musical ability: ability to lead singing and play at least one lead instrument. Musical skills are important, but equally important is a humble heart for directing a congregation in worship.
Ability to teach: Must be able to teach others in their music ability.
Candidate knows how to create an atmosphere of worship, removing distractions and directing the congregation towards praising God.
Candidate knows the musicality of songs and recognizes worship songs the congregation can sing and songs they cannot.
Candidate should have a love of hymns as well as contemporary praise music.
Candidate should be faithful, accessible, supported, and teachable:
Faithful- his yes is a yes and no is a no
Accessible- Easily reached when needed
Supported- Has a support network, spouse supports in ministry
Teachable- Able and willing to learn
Candidate has a desire to shepherd the flock in worship, using Sunday morning as a time to equip the Saints for the work of the ministry.
Relationships and Accountability Requirements:
To God: He should have an obvious love for the Lord and is primarily responsible to Him as the Chief Shepherd. He should view himself as constantly living before the presence of God. (1 Corinthians 16:22; 1 Peter 5:4)
To the congregation: He serves in a loving, servant-leadership role. He is to lovingly lead with authority of the Scriptures. Believing that all members of the body are accountable to one another, he shall be accountable to his brothers and sisters in Christ for his life.
(1 Timothy 5:19-20; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; 1 Peter 5:1-4)
To the Elders and Deacons: He submits to the Elder board. (Hebrews 13:17)
To the Senior Pastor: To ensure unity he will report to and closely work with the Senior Pastor. (Ephessians 4:3)
Scriptural responsibilities:
The role of Worship Pastor will be first and foremost based on what we see outlined in Scripture for church leadership. Where Scripture is silent or unclear, we conclude that additional responsibilities are either cultural additions or the responsibility of the whole church family.
Scripture:
He should be a man devoted to the study of the Scriptures and the ministry of prayer (Acts 6:4; 1 Timothy 2:1- 8; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 4:2; James 5:16).
Teaching:
He shall shepherd the congregation in worship with scripturally based lyrics, desiring the congregation to grow in their relationship with God. (2 Tim. 2:15; 4:1-2).
He shall be involved with the regular discipleship and development of worship leadership (2 Tim. 2:2).
Evangelism:
He shall lead in and encourage the congregation to pray for the lost (1 Tim. 2:1-8).
He shall encourage the congregation to share their faith personally and through church programs (2 Tim. 4:5).
Protect the flock:
He (along with the other Elders) shall help to carefully select church leaders on the basis of their godliness and character (1 Tim. 3:1-13, 5:22).
Ensure teaching is in alignment with the CBC doctrinal statement (Acts 20:28-30; 1 Tim. 4:1-6; I Tim. 6:20-21; 2 Tim. 1:13-14).
Family:
Live an exemplary life in both his personal and family life (Col 3:23-24, 1 Timothy 4: 7-8, 12; 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:1-7, 22 , 4:5)
The church recognizes the importance of family and therefore his family time and the spiritual care of his family should be balanced with other responsibilities.
Other areas of responsibility (along with the Elders and Deacons serving the flock):
Recruit congregants to help lead worship through both music and tech
Equipping those involved in the worship ministry
Continue to grow in knowledge of advancing technology
Stay up to date with software and copyright issues: (e.g. CCLI, Planning Center, Song Select, Sharefaith)
Create proposals and plans for updating church production equipment
Coordinate the flow of Sunday Service as well as other special services
Communicate with all involved with Sunday Service
Develop worship leaders for various ministries throughout CBC
Develop and foster worship throughout all CBC
Evaluation:
The church Elders shall evaluate his ministry at least annually based upon this description and any goals that were established at the end of the previous year, also called an Annual Calibration. The Elders and Deacons will make recommendations concerning the pastor’s salary based upon this Calibration meeting (1Timothy 5:17-18).
