Calvary Gears Up for Leadership Conference

Christian Leader’s Conference to address “What Makes Counseling Biblical?” Next Monday, February 17

On February 17, Calvary will hold the fourth annual Christian Leader’s Conference. This year’s topic is “What Makes Counseling Biblical?” Dr. Smith, Department Chair of Biblical Counseling, said this year’s conference subject matter “is two-fold… One point we’re trying to make here is what makes counseling biblical.” He pointed out that the term biblical counseling is used frequently, so specification of exactly what is encapsulated in the discipline is needed. “We’re going to try to look at the mechanics and elements of biblical counseling, and some of the fundamentals.”

The second aspect the conference will address, according to Dr. Smith, is “some misconceptions about the field of psychology. Is psychology a secular vocation? Can it be something that biblical counselors can utilize, something we should even be involved in?” Through the format of presentations and panel discussions, the Christian Leader’s Conference will address these questions and how they affect leaders in the Christian arena.

The Christian Leader’s Conference will feature presentations by Calvary faculty members Dr. Luther Smith, Dr. Christopher Cone, Dr. Thomas Baurain, William Stebbins, and Dr. Jeff Cox. Smith said, “The goal when people leave is to understand what biblical counseling is in contrast to all these other models. And, too, that they would have a more informed approach to disciplines, especially psychology.”

Calvary’s Volleyball Team to Host Youth Volleyball Program

Calvary’s Volleyball Team to Host Youth Volleyball Program

Women’s Volleyball Team partners with local recreation center to reach kids.

Calvary University’s Women’s Volleyball team is partnering with Belton Parks and Recreation to run a youth volleyball program called Little Diggers. Kevin Goodman, High Blue Wellness’s Recreational Manager, will be heading the program, with the cooperative efforts of the Calvary team. Little Diggers is designed for “1st and 2nd graders who would like to get a jump on learning the basic skills before entering the 3rd and 4th grade recreational volleyball league.” Calvary’s team will be training the students and investing in our local community.

Coach Ashley Spicer is optimistic about the opportunity her team has to serve and build up young athletes. She said, “We’ve been looking for way for Calvary to partner with the community when we met Kevin Goodman. We asked him what his needs were, and he said that he needs workers and would love for our college athletes to help build and start programs for young athletes in the Belton community.”

Spicer pointed out that lower grade sports programs are rare, and Calvary’s partnership with Belton Parks and Recreation will help to fill that need. Esther Schwarze, who plays Right Side on the volleyball team, expressed excitement “because of the opportunity to influence these young players and show them the love of Christ. I enjoy working with kids so this is a perfect situation to combine my love for volleyball and children.”

Participating students and their families will be invited to attend Calvary’s volleyball home games. For more information or to register, visit http://teamsideline.com/belton.

Warriors Top Ozark in 5-set Thriller

Warriors Top Ozark in 5-set Thriller

Calvary University Volleyball came out of a 5-set thriller with a win in Joplin, MO, over Ozark Christian College. The Lady Warriors had an excellent start to the game, coming out of the first set with a 25-21 victory. The Ozark Ambassadors had an answer for the Warriors, taking the next two sets 25-21, and 25-23. “The first set started out with high energy and focus,” said Coach Ashley Spicer. “We played tough the next two sets, but it wasn’t until the fourth set that we had an answer for Ozarks hitters.”

Going into the fourth set, Ozark had the momentum with a 2-1 lead over Calvary. The Warriors made adjustments to their defense and came out of the 4th set with a narrow 28-26 victory to take the match to a fifth set.”They played through pain and kept their focus on their serves,” said Coach Spicer. “Our aggressive serving is what kept our momentum going.” The Ambassadors were unable to find an answer for the Lady Warriors serves and hits, and the Lady Warriors came out of the fifth set with a 15-8 victory.

Jenny Her led the way with 35 digs followed by Anna Holloway with 24 of her own. The Warriors also had a star performance from Leah Grady who came out of the game with 5 solo blocks. The Warriors serving proved to be a difference maker with 8 aces as a team in the 3-2 victory. “We did a good job keeping an even tempo with our serves and communication,” said Anna Holloway. “We stayed really positive anytime we had trouble and we kept our ‘fix-it’ mentality throughout the entire game.”

The Lady Warriors will next travel to Ellendale, ND to take on both Trinity Bible College, and Dakota College at Bottineau in a Tri-match on Friday.

Second Annual Feast & Fund Auction Success!

Second Annual Feast & Fund Auction Success!

“First item up: 4 tickets to the May 5 Sporting KC game! We’ll start the bidding at $150!”

And with those words, the Feast & Fund Live Auction took off like a shot! Ringmen circled the crowd of 173 people as hands shot up, bidder numbers were called, and people laughed as our beloved guests animatedly vied for the items they desired.  The familiar rhythmic auctioneer chant swirled around the Student Life Center for a little over an hour until $65,046 was raised to buy the Calvary University students the much-needed appliances and furniture for the Kansas City dorm!

The Calvary University administrative staff and business partners worked tirelessly to make the second annual Feast & Fund Auction a fun-filled evening for all and by God’s strength and grace, the night was a success! Postponing once to allow us to bid farewell to the nasty winter weather proved to be a blessing as more attendees were able to make the “snow date.”

The doors opened at 5:30 pm on Friday, March 29, to allow our attendees to look over the 49 silent auction items before dinner at 6:30 pm. The smoked BBQ brisket dinner put together by our own David Allen, with sides provided by Jack Stack’s, was a huge hit as there wasn’t a single scrap of leftovers.

Our generous gold sponsors Bill & Debi Keeney of KW Realty Southland Partners, Heritage Companies, and Pickett Insurance were recognized before the live auction began. These businesses partner with Calvary for many events,  have done so for many years, and Calvary appreciates the way they continue to support our students.

The live auction featured 22 items and included things like autographed sports memorabilia, processed meat, firearms, exotic trips, and student-made goods.  During the Fund-A-Need segment, attendees gave generously and raised $18,860 which has been matched by a generous donor!

Calvary University wants to thank everyone who came out to support this event or gave in absentia. Your heart for the students is so appreciated and treasured. Keep your eyes open for upcoming information on the 2020 Feast & Fund Auction!
