Missions Emphasis Week
![]()
Each year our Missions Emphasis Week is a concentrated time for students to be exposed to missions. As students cultivate a heart for God's work around the world, they will be burdened to go or help to send others. This year our keynote speaker is Dr. Jack Elwood, President and CEO of Avant Ministries.
Dr. Jack Elwood was appointed the President of Avant Ministries in December of 2009. Dr. Elwood brings over 25 years of ministry experience to Avant. He began his ministry in Asia, serving 14 years as a field missionary. The following 15 years he served as a pastor at Euzoa Bible Church in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Burke Community Church in Burke, Virginia, Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Virginia, and Granada Heights Evangelical Friends Church in La Mirada, California. Most recently, he has worked in the Washington, D.C. area with the Washington Area Coalition of Men’s Ministries. The National Coalition of Men’s Ministry selected him as Pastor of the Year for 2007.
Dr. Elwood holds degrees from Point Loma College in San Diego, California, and William Carey International University in Pasadena, California, and earned a Doctor of Missiology from Biola University in La Mirada, California. He and his wife, Joan, have been married for more than 30 years and have four adult children and three grandchildren.
Our Missions Emphasis schedule will feature a special focus in chapel. Monday, January 28, will focus on state-side church planting missionaries and their ministries. Tuesday-Friday, January 29- February 1, will focus on church planting missionaries and ministries outside the United States. Chapel meets daily from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Liberty Chapel and is open to the public.
There will be no regular class for students on Thursday, January 31. Rather than classes, Missions Seminars will be held throughout the West Ed Building from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with lunch at 12:00 p.m. Calvary is pleased to host 32 missionaries representing 26 different mission organizations. The Calvary family is encouraged to visit the Conference Center and browse the missionary displays that will be set up all week.
