Aaron Poor Bear

Responsibilities: Head Women's Basketball Coach

Coach Poor Bear comes to Calvary after serving as an assistant coach at Manhattan Christian College during the 2015-16 season.  Prior to this, he spent seven seasons as an assistant high school basketball coach in Wagner, South Dakota. He was the head junior high basketball coach at Wagner for those seven years, as well. Lastly, he was a student assistant for the South Dakota State University men’s basketball team during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

Coach Poor Bear has developed many young ladies into great basketball players who have mastered the fundamentals of the game. He stresses the importance of a sound defensive-minded team and strong fundamental work.  He firmly believes that this will lead to building confident players and then a confident team.  He helped to build a high school program at Wagner, which had 7 winning seasons, a state tournament appearance in 2009, and an undefeated season in 2012.

Coach Poor Bear has been a part of many successful programs with winning traditions, and he is excited about the opportunity at Calvary.  “My wife and I are excited about the move to Kansas City and the position at Calvary Bible College. It’s a great fit for who we are and where we want to go,” said Coach Poor Bear.

Coach Poor Bear is an alumnus of South Dakota State University (2002) and is currently pursuing his master’s in Coaching Education through Ohio University.  He is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where he grew up with 13 brothers and sisters born to Mike and Mary Poor Bear.  Coach Poor Bear married his wife Shannon in 2013, and they recently had their first daughter, Kaia Esther, on April 6, 2016.
